The objectives of thyroid surgery
The operation is indicated in 3 situations:
1- in the event of a nodule presenting a risk of cancer at the end of the assessment carried out by: clinical examination + ultrasound + cytopuncture
2- in case of hyperthyroidism; (hot nodule, Graves' disease, multinodular hyperthyroid goiter); surgical treatment is chosen after consultation between the attending physician + the endocrinologist + the surgeon. The advantages and disadvantages are widely explained to the patient to inform their decision.
3- in case of a very large thyroid (goiter) with local intolerance, unsightly appearance or compression of the noble structures of the neck such as the trachea or the venous system.
